Manipulating Common Method Variance via Experimental Conditions

چکیده

Research data collected from single respondents may raise concerns regarding common method variance (CMV), which is believed to threaten the validity of findings. The primary concern that CMV can inflate substantive relationships, such they appear statistically significant when are not. Thus, understanding nature critical, especially one considers popularity—and sometimes necessity—of using self-report data. examining has found conflicting evidence about impact CMV. Researchers who believe influences findings have proposed solutions combat any real or perceived potential bias, including changing survey instructions and marker variables, but few studies examined efficacy these approaches. purpose this study examine techniques an experimental design. To conduct experiment, multiple versions a survey, vary in their use remedial approaches, utilized collect data, resulted 1,069 usable responses. design was based on faking literature included intended induce reduce levels Further, two different variables used determine degree create psychological separation variables. Correlation analysis measurement invariance analyze This posits that, if substantial for approaches effective, then will differ surveys incorporate do Results indicate differences conditions, meaning regardless variable, item correlations remained similar. results likely due minimal CMV, given methods correction did not significantly influence research These implications researchers support at least its remedies, alter However, null conclusions, spite appropriate statistical power, warrant future

Variance-Gamma approximation via Stein’s method

Variance-Gamma distributions are widely used in financial modelling and contain as special cases the normal, Gamma and Laplace distributions. In this paper we extend Stein’s method to this class of distributions. In particular, we obtain a Stein equation and smoothness estimates for its solution. This Stein equation has the attractive property of reducing to the known normal and Gamma Stein equ...

Running head : AN ANALYSIS OF COMMON METHOD VARIANCE A

There have been no systematic research efforts evaluating the effects of using self-report measures to collect data at a single point in time on research within the field of communication. In the present study we apply the marker variable approach to retrospectively analyze the extent of method bias in past communication research. Our findings indicate a significant problem in the field, with c...

Accounting for common method variance in cross-sectional research designs.

Cross-sectional studies of attitude-behavior relationships are vulnerable to the inflation of correlations by common method variance (CMV). Here, a model is presented that allows partial correlation analysis to adjust the observed correlations for CMV contamination and determine if conclusions about the statistical and practical significance of a predictor have been influenced by the presence o...

Common method variance in NEO - FFI and IPIP personality measurement

Including a method factor on which all items loaded significantly improved fit of CFAs of both IPIP and NEO-FFI data. Fit was further improved by separating the method factor into two factors representing construct-positive and construct-negative items. The criterion-related validity of conscientiousness increased when uncontaminated by method bias. PRESS PARAGRAPH This research extends previou...

Variance Estimation in Nonparametric Regression via the Difference Sequence Method

Consider a Gaussian nonparametric regression problem having both an unknown mean function and unknown variance function. This article presents a class of difference-based kernel estimators for the variance function. Optimal convergence rates that are uniform over broad functional classes and bandwidths are fully characterized, and asymptotic normality is also established. We also show that for ...
